History:
These fanatical followers of Magneto look to him as their savior. They believe that mutants should rule the flatscans (humans) and have no compuctions about killing, although not all of them are totally convinced of the righteousness of their cause. The original group of Acolytes stole a space shuttle to reach Asteroid M, where they convinced Magneto to once again take a stand against the world's treatment of mutants, especially in the country of Genosha, where mutants were essentially a slave caste. Magnus agreed, but in the end was betrayed by Cortez, who used his power-enhancing ability to mask the effects of Wolverine's attack, making Magneto believe he was healed when in reality he was dying. Cortez then activated the muclear missiles that Magnus had stationed around his home and fled, causing the destruction of Asteroid M, the death of the remaining Acolytes, and the apparent death of Magneto. A new group of Acolytes was gathered by Cortez, who touted himself as Magneto's chosen successor until Exodus showed up and told the Acolytes the truth. The Acolytes then went to Avalon and once again served Magneto until his mind was wiped by Professor X. Since then, the Acolytes have faithfully followed Exodus, who believes himself to be the mouthpiece of Magneto, even though his "rescuing" of and fight with Holocaust destroyed Avalon and cost the lives of many Acolytes. The Acolytes then based themselves in the Arctic Circle, where they planned to wreak untold havoc on Earth, until they were dissuaded from that purpose by Joseph, who was posing as Magneto. The Acolytes then attacked Mount Wundagore, home of the High Evolutionary, with a group of other mutants to secure Isotope E, which might be a cure for the Legacy Virus. In that battle, some of the Acolytes who are known to be dead were back. How this happened is uncertain. Anyone with an explanation, please email me here. Apparently, Exodus claimed to have been able to resurrect the dead Acolytes - Thanks, Sszl111! With the return of Magneto, the Acolytes split into two groups, one under his leadership, and one led by Cortez, although after their defeat by the X-Men, that was turned over to the police. Later, those Acolytes formed the superhuman component of the Carrion Cove rebellion against Magneto. Also, there is an Acolyte called Kath who looks like Katu, except with two bionic arms. Probably just a typo.
