The X-Men leave Muir Isle after their battle with the reality-warping Proteus. On the journey back to the X-Mansion, Phoenix experiences a strange sort of vision--she sees herself as a wealthy, 18th century lady on an ocean-going ship, in love with the handsome Jason Wyngarde. The daydream passes, and she and Cyclops reaffirm their love for one another.
When they arrive at the mansion, the X-Men discover that Professor X has returned. The team resumes training, but some members, such as Wolverine, have trouble dealing with the strict methods Professor X employs. Cyclops tries to talk to the professor about Wolverine's contrariness, but Xavier blames it on a lack of leadership on Cyclops's part.
The lecture on leadership is interupted as Cerebro detects two new mutants, one in Chicago and one in New York. The Professor decides to split the team into two units to approach the mutants. Nightcrawler, Cyclops and Phoenix pack up for New York City, while the Professor heads off to Chicago with Colossus, Storm and Wolverine.
Unbeknownst to the X-Men, the Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club had placed a bug in Cerebro, so they, also, learn of the new mutants and decide to approach them before the X-Men can.
In Chicago, Emma Frost (the White Queen of the Hellfire Club) approaches the family of thirteen year old Kitty Pryde with an offer to enroll in her prestigious Massachusetts academy. While her parents and Frost talk, Kitty's power first manifests itself, as she accidentally phases through her bedroom floor and falls into the living room below.
Frost leaves, just as Professor X arrives with his team. Kitty and the X-Men head off to the local malt shoppe while the Professor speaks with the Prydes. At the shop, the X-Men are attacked by Hellfire Club goons. The armored bad guys are easily dispatched, but the White Queen enters the fray and disables the X-Men telepathically. The White Queen and her cronies gather up the X-Men and cart them away. Unknown to the White Queen, however, Kitty Pryde escaped her assault and stowed away on the Hellfire Club hovercraft....
